Latest thoughts on Duke - by Jon Pessah
Things continue to get complicated for Mike Krzyzewski, who had hoped for a tranquil few months as he gears up for the Summer Olympics this August. Not a chance. The latest complication: Johnny Dawkins’ decision to take the head coaching job at Stanford, forcing a realignment of the Duke coaching staff at a time when K would rather be dissecting game film on Europe’s top teams.
The Dawkins announcement means that K has an adjustment to make on every level of his program. On April 1, freshman Taylor King became the latest McDonald’s All-America to leave Duke, and several people close to the program say another three players have considered the transfer option.
Three days later, embattled athletic director Joe Alleva, once one of K’s staunch allies, left for the AD job at LSU. K, already concerned about the prominence of football in the ACC and the attention Duke has promised to pay to its new football head coach, is concerned. That’s especially true since the man he’d like to see get the job, associate athletic director for basketball Mike Cragg, is not considered a strong candidate—in part because of his strong association with Krzyzewski.
It was objection many had about Dawkins, the star of the Class of ’86 that laid the foundation for Krzyzewski’s Duke dynasty. After 11 years as an assistant, Dawkins was K’s choice to succeed him when he finally stepped down. But many at Duke, including many who like Dawkins, wondered if Johnny knows where Krzyzewski’s thoughts ended and his own began.
We’ll soon find out, starting with how Dawkins builds his staff. He will need a strong recruiter—Dawkins was the least involved in recruiting of any K staffers—and someone versed in the Pac-10, lately the nation’s toughest conference. Dawkins, a quiet man off the court, has the reputation of being an in-your-face hard ass coach on the court, and it will be interesting to see how he adapts to the head job.

a couple of reviews
on friday night, harold and kumar 2 came out. i reluctantly went, thinking it wasnt going to be good at all. i was a huge fan of the first one, and looked forward to their adventures in amsterdam. so when it was escape from guantanamo bay, i was disappointed. but, to my surprise, the movie went beyond my expectations. the two still make a dynamic duo, and although they showed a lot of the funny parts in the previews, there was still much that came out of the blue. sure, some of it might be over the top, but look at some of the stuff that happened in the first movie. the first will always be a classic.
i'm not sure if i would run to go see this movie. there were some parts that were just stupid, but everyone else in the audience cried out laughing. my friends and i just looked at eachother, wondering what was so funny. there's tons of great movies coming out, wait for the summer blockbusters.

sunday night i went to see atmosphere at webster hall. if you haven't heard of them, you definetly need to check him out. the rapper, slug, and dj ant produced a great show, along with the rest of the group. here is a little excerpt from wikipedia (the all-knowing, most factual site on the web. just kidding, but seriously):
'Slug raps in an intensely personal, often introspective style, acting as a kind of storyteller relating his own experiences to his audience. Slug's songs often deal with alchohol problems, tour life and depression, and his difficult and destructive relationships with women.

slug went through a variety of his songs, but ended up playing more of his newer ones then his older ones. he recently came out with a cd named 'when life gives you lemons, you paint that shit gold.' check it out, it's very good. we were about 4/5 people back from the stage, so we were very close. slug got the whole audience involved, playing to them. he told everyone that he was nervous because it was a sold out show, but he did fine. he joked, he talked, he rapped. it was like he was one of our friends, but on the stage instead of right next to us. it was one of the best shows i've been to. his lyrics are deep, and their beats are extremely unique. atmosphere has a style all to their own.

Riding a Bike - by Blake Holl
Riding a Bike
So I decided to share with you gents and ungents the saga of riding a bike. I was walking tonight and all of a sudden a master cyclist biked right past me. No he was not in Lance Armstrong attire, chilling with McConaughey (they’re good friends in real life). This dude was riding his red bike with no hands, and if I might add… he was flying.
This made me think of the first time I learned to ride a bike. Let me tell you this, I was a late learner. Everyone usually learns in 1st grade or so. Well I didn’t learn until 4th or 5th grade.
On the corner of 5th and Jefferson I learned how to ride my white, huffy, kick ass bike. No, my mom didn’t run along side with me, guiding me and then letting go. I learned differently then your average tricyclist to bicyclist. I was instructed to sit on the bike with both feet on the ground and I guess “paddle” with my feet. I guess you can say gallop like a horse. This would allow me to build up speed (speed is the key; you cannot keep balance going slow – I learned the hard way). So once speed was built up, I was told to lift my feet up and try and keep my balance. Of course I was struggling for a long time. Did you honestly think I would be able to peddle so soon? No freaking way. That’s step 2. Step 2 is one step away from step 1, but it is really a million steps away. Think about it.
So I’m doing step 1 pretty good, but then my worst nightmare… PEOPLE. More specifically, it was a Dad and his kids. Yep, the kids were on bikes. Oh and they were much younger than me. So I say in extreme fright to my mom, “Ahh what do I do?” Mom has always got your back, it’s a solid fact, it don’t lack, and she’s the mack. “Just do the balancing thing and I’ll say ‘Don’t go too far Blake!’” Got to love mom. We fooled them. Suckers.
So after that quick scare, I kept going until it turned dark. I was able to balance using the gallop method. That’s all I can remember really. I learned the peddling thing a little while later, and was able to ride a bike. HA!
I’ll flash to now, where I’m pretty good on a bike. I can do a wheelie, and go down a curb. I still won’t go up on a curb, I could fall and look really dumb, not to mention mess up this pretty face. But I see these guys who ride with no hands. Who do these guys think they are? They got some nerve. I’d like to say something to them, but they’re usually going so fast I can’t get my point in.
I can barely ride with one hand mind you none. That is a last resort. Last resort as in I need my other hand to shoot someone with my water pistol, or grab a baby away from a nearby grenade. When I ride with one hand for more than a few seconds I lose control and most likely fall. It happens. When I let go with both hands, I do it as a challenge, and I am completely scared. Very frightened. I try and conquer my fears. If you time it just right, you can let go with both hands as you go by a girl, look cool, give her the “oh yeah riding with no hands” look, and quickly grab back onto the bars right after you pass them. Don’t get cocky though, bad things happen.
Don’t get me started on bmx bikers. Those guys… those guys. Oh, I used to have trouble riding on pegs too. I was scared of riding bikes in front of people when I was younger because I wasn’t as good. Well my final point is this, and I’ve been trying to preach this to my friends: I don’t want to drive anymore while at home. I just want to ride bikes with my friends to places. We’d be a bicycle pack. Wear all leather, get tattoos. I think it’d be even cooler if we put our training wheels back on our bikes.

the meaning of Babe
there's a scene in the movie that kind of sums up the overall theme for me. if you've never seen babe, it's a movie about a pig adapting to new life at a farm. farmer arthur hoggett (james cromwell) wins a pig at a carnival (i think that's what it was). after that, babe is befriended by one of the sheepdogs, fly, and learns about the other farm animals.
enough with the background of the movie. what this movie is about is overcoming challenges. farmer hoggett decides to train babe to become a sheep pig, and then compete in a sheepdog competition. one night, babe gets to sleep in the house instead of outside. the house cat tells babe that the only reason he's at the farm is to be eaten.
"Oh, all right. For your own sake, I'll be blunt. Why do the Bosses keep ducks? To eat them. So why do the Bosses keep a pig? The fact is that animals that don't seem to have a purpose really do have a purpose. The Bosses have to eat. It's probably the most noble purpose of all, when you come to think about it."
babe then runs away in the woods, and stays out there all night in the rain. farmer hoggett and the sheep dogs find him the next day, very sick. up next, i have a video of after they find him.

the farmer tries to encourage babe to feel better, and he also performs a feat of his own. while doing his jig, he cheers him up by dancing to him and, for the lack of a better term, he gets jiggy with it... i feel like he helps babe by showing him that if you work hard enough, you can do whatever you want (there are probably other interpretations of his jig, but this is mine). he jumps very high, and then lands a little unsteadily. he turns to see babe, but he sees all of his animals watching him, but no babe. to his delight, he realizes babe is already up and ready to go, eating his fill, and then coming back out, as if saying to his master, "i'm ready to go."
i read a bunch of the comments after watching. many people said it was very emotional. a few even said they were crying, and they didn't even know why. after i watched it, i had a feeling of achievement. if a pig can become a sheepdog, why cant we do anything we want, like becoming a general in halo, or having the ability to fly, or even getting to fraternity meetings on time (sorry, that's kind of a stretch).
anywho, i'll leave you not with a video, but with an interesting event.

review of forgetting sarah marshall
to start, i want to wish everyone a happy passover. to those who will be on the hunt for the afikomen, i bid you good luck. now, on to other business.
for a movie that had huge expectations, i'm pretty sure that this movie surpassed them. i rushed my friends and my brother there to make sure we got good seats. i've been waiting for months for this to come out, and i wasnt going to miss it.
i don't think i went more than 2/3 minutes at a time without laughing, sometimes even laughing for a half hour at a time (just kidding, but seriously). there were times when i was laughing along with the audience, and other times when i giggled out loud by myself during silence. that was also fun.
the cast is just awesome. jason segel blows everyone away. a little fun fact: he really did have a naked breakup with a girlfriend. the two women, kristen bell and mila kunis play great roles of the X and the new girl, and bell's new boy friend is so uniquely weird and in some ways, cool, that it makes for great interactions. other great appearances include bill hader, jonah hill, and paul rudd, to name a few.
not only was this movie hilarious (i'd say it trumps knocked up and superbad, the two movies i was asked to compare it to), but it was very realistic. it showed the side of segel, playing the miserable dumped boyfriend very well, and then bell, who turns into the jealous x girlfriend when she realizes the connection between segel and kunis, is done well also. once again, judd apatow produces an extremely funny but also realistic film. you are able to relate to the characters at at least one time or another. i left this movie feeling very satisfied, opposite to how i felt after i saw semi-pro.
i would definetly recommend going to see it. if you cant make it today, then hopefully soon, like asap. if you cant find the afikomen, tell everyone youre looking at the movie theatre. maybe someone hid it there. you dont want someone to ruin the movie for you by telling you parts like tom saggese did for me when he ruined the 6th harry potter book when he told me dumbledore died and i was so pissed off but i still read it and it was amazing but i havent read the 7th one yet and i think this sentence has run-on for too long.
i would have to give this cinematic adventure (thanks to dane cook for that term) an 11 out of 10. ok, i'm done talking this movie up. everyone enjoy your charoset, shankbone, bitter herb, and everything else. a round of manichevitz for the table.

for a movie that had huge expectations, i'm pretty sure that this movie surpassed them. i rushed my friends and my brother there to make sure we got good seats. i've been waiting for months for this to come out, and i wasnt going to miss it.
i don't think i went more than 2/3 minutes at a time without laughing, sometimes even laughing for a half hour at a time (just kidding, but seriously). there were times when i was laughing along with the audience, and other times when i giggled out loud by myself during silence. that was also fun.

don't be confused everyone, this isn't a post by me. i'm not ready to write on the political side, yet. so, without further ado, here's another post by my dad.

The Numbers Game and the Blowjob Loophole

Every relationship (usually) ends up facing the “big test”: can the two lovers withstand the brutality that is their partner’s “number”? It could come at any time – after a few weeks, where the relationship appears serious. Perhaps it is after the first time you sleep together. Usually the girl is the one who asks the question that seems to echo for all eternity: “So, how many people have you been with?” The “been with” is almost always said awkwardly. At this point, the guy has to frantically think. Maybe his number is too high, and he feels he should lie to avoid appearing dirty. Or maybe he should be honest, and make his girl feel paranoid and jealous, as she contemplates if she is merely “one of many.”
The “Numbers Game”, or the “Accounting of Relationships”, as I call it, can really make or break a relationship. Sometimes, after only a couple of weeks, it is hard to judge the reaction of a woman. Just like a high number can have positive or negative effects, so can a low number. If the number is low, a girl may be impressed with your discipline and careful choosing. On the other hand, she may wonder why the number is so little. A thought such as, “He’s been in college for four years…what the hell has this chump been doing with his time?” could always pop in her head. In a perfect world, everyone would just be honest. More often that not, that just does not happen. The numbers conversation is an important one, so men, choose your number wisely.
If I had to guess, I would say girls lie much more than guys. For guys, there’s no truly wrong answer. The only guys who really may be forced to lie are the “alpha-males”, the guys who make up a small percentage of men and could be considered outliers. There numbers are 30-80 by the time they’re in their early 20’s. The sheer thought of an STD could scare any girl away from this womanizing breed. So, guys, if you are no alpha male, you can relax a little bit. If you really can’t judge your girl on her reaction, then just be honest.
For girls, it’s trickier. The majority of guys are almost always arrogant in two categories:
-They want to have a son from their gene pool. They want to “keep the good name going”
-They do not want their special girl to have been marked by too many guys, just like a dog doesn’t want his fire hydrant peed on by too many dogs (especially rotweillers or other fierce competitors, who could be the “alpha males” of the canine species)
So, as most girls know, if the number is too large, there may be problems. The guy can easily be turned off. He may not necessarily break up with the girl (if Ed Harris can get together with a hooker in “Milk Money”, guys can deal with a girl that has a bigger track record than the Beatles), but there may be issues throughout the relationship. Whenever the girl kisses a guy on the cheek or gives a flirtatious hello, her guy may be filled with jealousy and hostility. They’ll have the same fight over and over again, about how the guy can’t comprehend the hovering cloud over the relationship, the number. Girls know this, so how can they avoid this problem? Here is where the Blowjob Loophole comes into play.
Never have I ever heard a guy ask a girl how many guys she has given oral sex to. Partners only ask each other how many people they have slept with. Most guys think about this, but are too afraid to ask. The thought of the act of our girl giving oral sex to a different guy is just too much to handle. We try to block it out and some guys may even make believe that their girl has only given oral sex to past boyfriends (this guy is known as someone “in denial”).
Using this information, crafty girls can keep men off their resumes, just like Enron kept billions of dollars of debt off their balance sheet. The debt still existed, but they didn’t have to show it.
Let’s say a girl I am dating has only slept with 5 guys and she’s 21 years old. I would be more than happy with this number. Now, what I do not know, though, is that she has given oral sex to 22 guys. If I knew this, I would be upset. However, I’ll never find out – and the girl knows this.

is the pink starburst overrated?
i'm going to be blunt. i think it is very overrated (sorry if i hurt anyone's feelings). it used to be everyones favorite. the red didn't really have the burst of flavor like the pink did, but the red was still very good. it was more of an extended release of a very good flavor. but, in the end, it was the burst that caught everyone. you just couldn't love anything more than the pink starburst flavor.
then, i think starburst came out with a promotional commerical, which was mainly focused on the pink starburst. after that, everyone wanted the pink one. it was cool to like pink.
if you buy a starburst pack at the store, you better know the person/people you're with is/are going to ask you for at least one. for the past few years, it's been that just the pink is sacred. people are easy to give away the red now because they are just captured by the pink. red was expendable...
but after a while, i feel that since people kept giving away the reds, everyone just got sick of and bored of the pink. the red had a great flavor, orange was ok (i'll give it a 6.5), and the yellow was the worst. only a small percentage of people on earth enjoy that flavor the most.
red came back into the mix. people realized that they could get more bang for your taste (taken from more bang for your buck) with the red starburst. they could still have a great flavor, and it can now be stretched out for longer.

top 5 athletes who are criminals
not sure how i thought of this topic, but i actually learned something i didn't know. in the nba alone, 40% of the players have a criminal record. ironically, this post comes on the day that carmello anthony was arrested for suspicion of DUI. oddly enough though, there are no basketball players on this list (sorry for spilling the beans).
number 5 goes to the newst member, Michael Vick. we all know about this case. it was almost a year ago that there was evidence of dogfighting at Michael Vick's home in Virginia. on december 10, 2007, he was sentenced to 23 months in a federal prison for dog fighting and animal cruelty. prior to his arrest, Vick played football for the Atlanta Falcons. even though he played quarterback, his superior athletic skills enabled him to become a running threat as well. in 2006, he became the only quarterback ever to rush for over 1000 yards in a season. this upcoming link shows some of his top plays from his college days ast Virginia Tech as well as his NFL days for the Falcons

the number 1 spot goes to a boxer by the name of Carlos Monzon. he beat his first wife repeatedly. soon, they became public knowledge, and he was continually detained by police. besides beating his wife, he also had paparazzi hospitalized because of his beatings. he beat his second wife so much that she ran, scared and bloody, to their balcony on the second floor. according to the investigation performed later, he followed her there, grabbed her by the neck, and then picked her up and pushed her off the balcony, falling to her death. in 1989, he was sentenced to 11 years in jail. in 1995, he was given a temporary leave of absence to visit his family and kids. when he was returning to jail after his weekend, he crashed near the jail building, dying instantly. Monzon held the world middleweight title for 7 years. he finished with 87 wins (59 by knockout), 3 loses, 9 draws, and 1 no contest.

call of duty
sorry everyone for the recent lack of posts. call of duty has been taking up a lot of my time, and i have to say i'm very impressed with it. i never thought i would say this, but i think it might be better than halo. the gameplay is extremely realistic, you can switch your gun sets during the round, you can run (make it easier to evade people), shooting with guns is more realistic (the sniper has a big recoil after you shoot it). i find myself getting more upset when i die in this game than i do in halo. another thing is that the game keeps score better. you get 10 points for killing someone, and you can also get less than that for shooting but not killing someone. i think the best thing is the maps. they're huuuge, and they have crevices and tunnels and tons of different rooms. everything in the maps are interactive, you can jump on cars, go into broken down buses, and plenty else. the also have stun grenades, which, if you get hit, messes up your sight and movement. it's so cool that i don't even get mad when i get hit with one. there's never a dull moment in call of duty 4. i can probably go on and on about this game, but my turns coming up soon, so i'll finish quick.
there is one downside though. only one person can play at a time on each xbox, meaning you have to take turns instead of everyone playing. right now fiore's team is winning, scratch that, just won.
i'm going to have to play halo before i can officially announce my decision also. sorry to bungie, and everyone else who is loyal to halo. time to play. another post later.

Ok, seems odd to be writing about K on the night Kansas staged a historic comeback to win the title. Feel bad for Memphis kids, blowing a nine point lead, but have little sympathy for John Calipari, who strikes me as far too big a self promoter. Memphis was World Wide Wes' team (read this in Saturday's NYT for story on the most powerful person in basketball http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/05/sports/basketball/05wesley.html?_r=1&oref=slogin&ref=sports&pagewanted=all). I'm sure he has connections in Kansas, too, but Coach Cal is his guy.
Things got a little more complicated for Mike Krzyzewski, who took another hit on the road to recovery when Taylor King transferred out of Duke last week. Several people at Duke say there are three other kids thinking of getting out, which is no surprise. K seemed to lose interest at the end of the season when he lost to Miami and Wake Forest. I think he knew then this team had little chance in the NCAA, and lost focus. Rumors are that he turned on the team in the lockerroom after the game. King follows Josh McRoberts as big time AAU players who left Duke feeling ill about the program, and that will not help K’s recruiting.
Now there will be a new athletic director at Duke, replacing Joe Alleva, who owed his job to his relationship with K. Alleva was exposed as a weak administrator by the Duke lacrosse case, and was marginalized. He left for LSU, in all likelihood because he knew his time was limited at Duke, despite a contract extension. The big question will be who Duke can bring in and if that person can handle K, who has run his own kingdom for a long, long time. Duke just hired a new football coach and is planning to invest much more in football, which has been an embarrassment for the school. Bringing in an AD with a football background would be a big statement to K about where the school is heading.
So, the question becomes how long K stays in a situation where he can not win as he once did. At 60, that just doesn’t sound all that appealing. K is being criticized again for spending too much on the Olympics and not enough on Duke, and more than a few people around him say that he talks more about the NBA players on his team than about the college kids on his Duke team. Interesting.

review of the ruins
this movie is one of those fucked up, you look at the person next to you and say what the fuck was that shit and they say i have no fucking idea (i'm pretty sure that conveys the dialogue). so these kids go to these ruins in mexico, and apparently the bushes are lethal. not only are they lethal, but they can sing, imitate noises, fuck with your head, grab people and drag them, slide into people open cuts and move around in your body, then start eating your body, grow at an exponential speed, and probably cook dinner too (just kidding about the dinner, but that'd be cool).
i was going to tell you what happened, but i just re-read my review and it's too suspensful. but, it was a rather exciting flim and it kept me on my feet. if you like bloody movies, you'll shoot yourself over this one! i know, bad joke. sorry.

south park is taking it to the next level
i used to watch south park a lot a long time ago. then, for some reason, i started to drift away from it. i went back to my roots in the simpsons, and then fled to family guy. i never though it could get any better than family guy.
i was wrong. i started watching south park again in the middle of last season and i was blown away. some of the things they come up with are just plain genius (like bobby fisher genius, or the pet rock genius). the first episode i came back to was Imagination Land, a three episode series in which the boys are taken to Imagination Land and have to save it from the government nuking it. guest appearances include:
the good imaginary characters
ronald mcdonald
luke skywalker
popeye
aslan
teenage mutant ninja turtles
gandolf
count chocula
strawberry shortcake
plus many more...
the bad imaginary characters
storm troopers
wario
frankenstein
alien
predator

then there's kurt russell, whose not imaginary, but deserves to be recognized.
south park creators trey parker and matt stone use a lot of current events and popular entertainment in their shows. their episodes stretch from osama bin laden, the day after tomorrow movie, family guy, world of warcraft computer game, scientology, dawn of the dead movie, brittany spears, and youtube. being able to integrate some of these things into their episodes is very tricky, some things touchy, but they have made it work.
some of you may think south park is just bathroom humor and such, but is, in fact, a very intelligent and funny show. their new season came out a couple weeks ago, and it has not lost anything from the last one.

myspace, the new king of the internet?
myspace, along with three of the four major record companies, have agreed to create a music website where you will be able to listen to free streaming music, make your own playlists and share them, and download music for things like your ipod.
who knows what might come out of this. this idea will be something that goes up against itunes, another place where you can easily buy music with the click of your mouse (or touchpad). i personally think it's a great idea. myspace already has a huge community, so why not extend it with music, which is always a conversation-stimulator for people (big fan of the term conversation-stimulator).
now, instead of sharing your playlists through a shared network connection like on itunes, you can do that through myspace. you can discuss your music, talk to people about other artists who play similar music, and then it's also just another way to meet people.
there might be a catch though. they're thinking about making it a monthly subscription type thing, which you pay per month and get unlimited access to the music.

i am your teacher
sounds catchy right? yeah, i'm not really your teacher, but i feel like giving my philosophy on video games right now. you might like it, it's quite... interesting, i hope. anyway, so here it goes.
i feel that playing video games shows a lot about who you are and how you deal with difficult situations. since i play halo a lot, i'll use that as my example. hopefully, you know what halo is. i think that you play video games a lot like how you deal with life. i'm sorry if i repeat myself or go back and forth but i'm actually in the middle of a game.
so, when you're playing halo, you start out terrible. everyone knows how many times they need to hit you before they can beat you down, what angles to throw the grenades, when to jump so you can make the far leap, and much more. so you play and play and play, and you learn how to adapt and be the best player possible. then, once you reach a certain rank, you get into a whole new pool of players who are better than you because they've been playing at that certain level longer. therefore, you need to play and play and play more and learn even more skills to beat that new competition. and so on and so on. that's why i feel that if you are good at video games, you know what it takes to reach your goals, because you've done it once in a video game. all you need to do it use that same drive and that same... want to be the best at something attitude.
i need a break.

my blog...and more
i feel like putting that advisory before entering my blog would make my blog seem more badass, but in fact, its just another annoyance that i'm too lazy to change. therefore, you're still going to have to click that tab before reading my genius works of art.
on another note, i have another observation. i will call it, the observation of nature:
what do you think of when you see/feel/hear/or even smell rain? i think of the advisory before my blog, just kidding, but seriously. no, i'm just kidding again. i think of something that is unnecessary and should be taken down a notch. but sometimes, i remember the old days, when rain was a god amongst men. running around in the rain was cool, playing sports in the rain (which is still awesome) was even more awesomer, when being soaked was a thrill in life. now, it makes you slow down while driving, ruins your shoes, causes flash floods, and probably a bunch of other things. i have to clean my dog's paws everytime i let her out (shana for future reference).
on another another note, i feel like my fantasy draft went well after looking at it a second time. i have 4 closers, so i can shop around one for either a starter or a big bat somewhere. i'm still happy with chase utley as my first selection. hopefully, knock on wood, he doesnt get injured. and i finished up my picks with a future hall-of-famer, greg maddux, to guide my players into stardom. i'm not too worried.

gotham city
im really tired, but i thought everyone should ponder this with me... im watching batman and robin, but i feel like in pretty much every batman movie, gotham city is either dark with weird bright lights, or they're down this weird alley that would never exist. im baffled.
